For some 700,000 people (credit The Courier Journal), they spent their day watching the number one air show in the country, eating funnel cakes and watching the longest Thunder Over Louisville fireworks display in its history.
With the weather topping out at about 64 degrees during the day, the Louisville Waterfront provided and cool and breezy start to the big bang display. The low toppled down to around 38 at night and kept the crowd chilly and dancing with anticipation. Those sporting tank tops, shorts and flip-flops seemed to get the worst of the chill; the wait felt like days.
That wait turned into an even longer one. The air show provided entertainment from 3 p.m. on until the first pop of fireworks. Those waiting for the real thing would have to wait a little longer than usual.
The 21st annual show is known for its prompt start time of booming at the usual 9:30 p.m. start time. But, for the first time ever it took an extra 18 minutes to kick start the show due to a computer reboot problem (credit The Courier Journal).
Nonetheless, the show didn’t disappoint and for many was worth the wait wearing smiling faces of awe peeking through their blankets. After all, a fireworks show synchronized to music ranging from Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert and Star Wars doesn’t come every day.
