Law students provide free tax return help

With just less than two months until tax day, University of Kentucky law students are offering free assistance preparing returns.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will help prepare tax returns through Tuesday, April 17, the IRS tax filing deadline.
Students who help prepare returns are required to complete 12 to 18 hours of federal income tax courses and pass two certification tests from the IRS, according to a UK news release.
Those who want help having their returns prepared must make an appointment through the VITA website.
Those eligible for help with returns must have income only from wages, scholarships, interest, dividends, simple self-employment, simple pensions, unemployment insurance, social security or small miscellaneous items, such as gambling winnings, according to the VITA website.
Visit the VITA website for complete information and hours, and view frequently asked questions before making an appointment.
