While no official confirmation has come from either FSU or UK officials, Mark Stoops is about to make the jump. And, he’s in Florida, about to talk to players, not in Lexington, as rumored.
According to defense secretary, Nicole Lamar, FSU defensive coordinator Mark Stoops is attending FSU team meeting right now. This meeting is following rumors of Stoops being in Lexington and being named UK’s new football coach. The only confirmation is sources from KSR.
At about 1:35 p.m. today, Matt Jones, the figure behind the sports blog Kentucky Sports Radio tweeted “Official: KSR can confirm that Mark Stoops will be named Kentucky football coach this afternoon.”
However, there is no official on-the-record confirmation of the hire of the FSU defensive coordinator to replace Joker Phillips, who was fired in the middle of a losing season. Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher, the Tallahassee Democrat reports, will speak to the media after FSU practice today to address “the Stoops situation.”
Stoops’ phone number at FSU is answered by a recording that advises callers to check the number.
The University of Kentucky Athletics Web site lists no announcement and no time for a press conference.
The Lexington Herald-Leader, Kentucky Kernel, WKTY, LEX 18 and other local media outlets have not confirmed with a second source.
Matt Jones, @KySportsRadio on Twitter, however, says that that he will be live for a special edition on the hiring from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on 630 AM WLAP.
You can listen to the show online at 630 WLAP or on iHeartRadio.
The head coaching position pays about $1.7 million a year under the contract issued to Phillips. UK President Eli Capiluto, according to public records of Herald-Leader, has a salary of $500,000 a year. UK’s lauded men’s basketball coach, John Calipari is an annual salary of $4 million a year, but estimates put his annual net at about $12 million. Gov. Steve Beshear earns $133,644 a year.
Since Stoops took over as defensive coordinator at FSU, he has improved his unit from one of the worst nationally to No. 2 overall this year.
Several UK football players have tweeted about Stoops in the past hour.
