Freshman guard Brandon Knight and freshman forward Terrence Jones may be the new John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins for the UK men’s basketball team.
Knight scored 37 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Jones notched 29 points and eight rebounds in the Blue team’s 101-74 win over the White team at Rupp Arena Tuesday night.
The Knight-Jones tandem consists of the two most-heralded freshman in the Cats’ recruiting class this year. Although their performances were impressive, UK men’s basketball head coach John Calipari urged the media to not start drawing comparisons to his 35-3 team from a year ago.
“I’m going to have fun coaching this team, but it’s a process,” Calipari said.
He added that the 6-foot-8 Jones should be more willing to drive to the basket instead of settling for jump shots, and that Knight needs to have “his game defined a bit” because he is a point guard that has no qualms about shooting the basketball if a pass isn’t readily available.
All 10 players on the UK roster played the entire 40 minutes because at 5:30 p.m. Calipari got word from the NCAA that former Cats Perry Stevenson, Mark Krebs and Wayne Turner would not be allowed to participate in the scrimmage, otherwise the game would lose its status as only a scrimmage.
The non-stop action didn’t seem to bother the players, however.
“(I was wearing out) the whole game,” Jones joked.
“It was fun though,” he said. “Everyone was getting a feel for playing in front of that many people.”
11,391 fans were on hand to witness their Cats in action.
UK next takes to the floor of Rupp Arena on Nov.1 in exhibition game against Pikeville.
