Three days. Forty-four sponsors. 309 acres of untapped crags.
Last weekend, hundred of people came out to the Natural Bridge Campgrounds in Slade, Ky to attend the annual fundraising event held by the Red River Gorge Climbing Coalition. This year fundraising efforts went toward paying off the newly acquired Miller Fork Recreational Preserve.
My weekend began by checking in under the white tent. I’d already pre-registered; it was my first donation of the weekend to MFRP. Friday kicked off the crate stacking competition. Local gym owner, Bram Bell, is the reigning champ of crate stacking. The closest I saw anyone come to beating Bram’s record was an impressive 22 crate stack! Later that evening Reel Rock 8 was shown.
Saturday morning was the Clip-and-Go Climbing Comp in the Motherlode area of PMRP. No surprise, local phenom Adam Taylor was crowned king. While the PMRP was impossible to get parking in to see the comp, most people went their separate ways to enjoy the fall air and friction it brings.
Dinner was catered by Bourbon n’ Toulouse. By dinner time, I’d already made my second MFRP donation by buying a sweet vest and jacket from the Moosejaw vendor. Land conservation never looked so good.
After dinner came everyone’s favorite tradition: the arm wrestling comp sponsored by Benchmark.
With all the raffles drawn, the prizes awarded and the winners crowned, Saturday evening is the unofficial end of Rocktoberfest, with everyone packing up and leaving Sunday morning with the Solid Rock Climbers for Christ pancake breakfast to see you off. With supplies exhausted, vendors also began to pack up.
